Setting Up The Fish Bowl
- Fill bowl with water. Ideal temperature should be 70°-72° F.
- Place aquarium gravel in the bowl. If you are using an under gravel filter, put it in before the gravel.
- Use Jack's Complete Water Conditioner to remove chlorine from the tap water.
- Add 1/2 teaspoon of aquarium salt per gallon to the water. Aquarium salt is a natural additive to help prevent and cure diseases.
- Add live plants & decorations.
Feeding Fish
- Fish in a small bowl should be fed once daily. Feed only what the fish can eat within 1 minute. The major cause of cloudy water is over feeding.
- Goldfish should be fed a good quality flake food. A Betta should be fed freeze dried or frozen blood worms and/or brine shrimp.
Helpful Information
- Male Bettas must be housed separately from other Bettas. Females Bettas can only be placed with male Bettas at the time of breeding under special conditions.
- Goldfish may be housed with other goldfish, but do not overcrowd the bowl.
- Add the fish by floating them in a bag in the bowl for 10-15 minutes for the water temperature to adjust. Net the fish out of the bag into the bowl.
- We recommend 1" of fish per gallon of water.
- Decaying food and fish waste can cause ammonia in the water which is harmful to the fish.
- We recommend not putting shells or coral in a goldfish bowl. Shells and coral raise the pH too high and are harmful to the health of freshwater fish..
Signs of Water Quality Problems
- Fish have red streaks in fins or clamped fins
- Fish gasping at the surface for air or breathing rapidly
- Fish develop bacterial infections
- Fish death
- Bad odor or a yellow cast to water
- Foam at the water’s surface
